SOT shift report 2005-12-08 L2696 Duration: 08 Dec 2006 07:00 EST - 08 Dec 2006 10:00 EST (Day 342) 08 Dec 2006 12:00 GMT - 08 Dec 2006 15:00 GMT SOT Lead: Bill Podgorski PLAN ---- Solar radiation levels are extremely high (P3 ~ 65,000) but very slowly decreasing. We are not currently observing. A replan load (DEC0906A) is in work, for uplink during the 342/2145-0000 pass (BOT: 2245). This load begins observations later today with with 'IRAS 20050+2720' (obsid 6438). REPLAN DISCUSSIONS ------------------ The radiation situation does not look good for starting the DEC0906A loads this afternoon, so another replan load will be generated. The new replan, "Plan B", will aim to start at around 344/0100. The load will start with a roll adjustment and momentum dump, both needed anyway before Sunday. These will be contained within the initial load segment, with science observations starting in the second segment of the load, thus providing the capability to do the required roll adjust and momentum dump without resumption of science. Observations will begin with 'IRAS 20050+2720' (obsid 6438). A radiation telecon will be held later today, at 5:50pm EST, on #1159, just before the pass starting at 2245. Seq # ObsID Constr. Flare and CME activity are still possible from region 930. 3-day Solar-Geophysical Forecast issued Dec 7 at 22:00 UTC Solar Activity Forecast: Solar activity is expected to be moderate to high. Region 930 is expected to produce further M-class flares and there is a good chance for X-class activity. Geophysical Activity Forecast: The geomagnetic field is expected to range from unsettled to minor storm levels with a chance for major storm periods for the next three days (08 - 10 December). Although the magnetic cloud associated with the X9 flare and CME observed on 05 December is not expected to impact earth, a shock passage is likely; consequently, active to minor storm periods are expected on 08 December. CME activity associated with the M6 and X6 flares on 06 December is expected to cause occasional major storm periods late on 08 December and 09 December. Disturbed conditions are expected to continue through 10 December. The greater than 10 MeV proton event is expected to continue through 09 December. The greater then 100 MeV proton event appears to have peaked and, barring another injection of high energy protons, the event should end on 08 December. EPHIN rates (cts/cm^2-s-sr) at last comm.
