SOT shift report 2008-12-08 L3427 File created at 2008:343:13:50 UTC = 08:50 AM Dec-08-2008 EST End 11:00:00 AM EST SOT Lead: Ed Kellogg PLAN ---- OBSID 10831, Eta Car 2008:343:12:50, ACIS-S HETG - Shock Dynamics in Eta Carinae Approaching the 2009 Periastron Passage: A Twisted Tail CURRENT STA. PASS Support-UTC BOT EOT ---Station------ Local Time ----------------- ------------ --- --- ---------------- ---------- (none) MP: Working on the next load S/C: We held CAP reviews this morning: CAP 1100 for reconfiguring EPHIN and a CAP to patch the associated K constants to the new configuration. We will also have a CAP review tomorrow or Wednesday for the beginning of the upcoming eclipse season. The plan for EPHIN is to reconfigure it tomorrow, in either early morning or afternoon. Because detector A in EPHIN is experiencing high rates from internal noise as a result of increasing temperatures, it will be turned off. Portions of detector B will also be turned off. Consequently, the coincidence logic must be changed. We will also add an HRC MCP total rate to RADMON monitoring for additional protection. This will only provide a trigger if the MCP HV is at an operational level. The new monitored quantities will be: Name Contents Trigger value ---- -------------------------------- ------------- E150 = E150(old) + P4GM + H4GM + B_noise 800000 E1300 = E1300 + P25GM + H25GM 1000 1000 HRC 30. Thus, the new E150 and E1300 will no longer be just electrons, but will be a combination of electrons and ions (protons, helium, etc.). We have done studies that assure the new quantities will provide adequate monitoring to protect Chandra. The EPHIN configuration change will impact the following ground procedures and software: SOP_OPS_SOLAR_ACTIVITY, SOP_SAFE_SAFING_ACTIONS, Limits monitoring, GRETA and EHS displays, SOT MTA alerts. The new configuration also changes the calibration file used in CXCDS. A new calibration file is to be installed on CXCDS. Finally, the section of this shift report that reports "Radiation Measurement" will be changed accordingly, beginning with the first shift report following the execution of the CAPs, expected tomorrow.
