SOT shift report 2008-12-09 L3428 File created at 2008:344:13:45 UTC = 08:45 AM Dec-09-2008 EST End 11:00:00 AM EST SOT Lead: Ed Kellogg This morning we ran CAPs 1100 and 1097 to reconfigure the EPHIN particle detector onboard Chandra, to improve its ability to detect particle events that could damage our imaging detectors. CAP 1100 switched off a noisy EPHIN detector and 1097 patched the flight software to set new particle rate safing thresholds. PLAN ---- OBSID CAL-ER (57458) 2008:344:11:22 CURRENT STA. Significant solar activity: At midnight the visible solar disk was spotless. The solar flare activity level was very low. GOES X-ray flux: very low. David Hathaway of the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center is noting sunspots of the old and new solar cycles. When he plots sunspot numbers, it's clear a change is taking place: "New Solar Cycle 24 is on the upswing while old Solar Cycle 23 is decaying," he says. The sun is still in the pits of a deep solar minimum, but ... it won't last forever. An increasing number of new-cycle sunspots over the past three months and in the months ahead should propel the sun out of the doldrums, eventually leading to a full-fledged Solar Max around 2012 (http://www.spaceweather.com/).
