SOT shift report 2008-12-12 L3431 File created at 2008:347:13:52 UTC = 08:52 AM Dec-12-2008 EST End 11:00:00 AM EST SOT Lead: Ed Kellogg Today is the 38th anniversary of the launch of the first orbiting X-ray astronomy observatory, Uhuru. Lofted on a Scout rocket from a platform in the ocean off the coast of Kenya, it was named in honor of Kenya's independence. Uhuru observed celestial X-ray sources in orbit with its simple scanning X-ray detectors for over three years. It discovered many exciting new objects including: black hole and neutron star binaries, massive hot gas clouds in clusters of galaxies. Also known as Explorer 42, Small Astronomy Satellite SAS-A and SAS-1, it was the first in a series of X-ray astronomy missions that has led to much more powerful X-ray observatories such as Chandra and XMM-Newton. The flight prototype now resides in the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum. PLAN ---- OBSID CAL-ER (57453) 2008:347:12:45, then CAL-ER (57452) 2008:347:14:57 CURRENT STA. PASS Support-UTC BOT EOT ---Station------ Local Time ----------------- ------------ --- --- ---------------- ---------- (none) MP: The DEC1508 load was reviewed yesterday, revised, and will be reviewed again today by 10:00 am. S/C: Significant solar activity: New-cycle sunspot 1009 is rotating over the sun's western limb. The annual Geminid meteor shower peaks on Dec. 13th and 14th when Earth passes through a stream of debris from extinct comet 3200 Phaethon. A solar wind stream flowing from a coronal hole could reach Earth on Dec. 12th. However, because of the high northern latitude of the hole, the stream could miss Earth, sailing over the north pole of our planet. GOES X-ray flux: There were six short duration A class events earlier today. They are not expected to cause any disruptions to Chandra because they are not very intense.
