APEC

The Astrophysical Plasma Emission Code

The Astrophysical Plasma Emission Code is a C-based computer code which inputs APED, the Astrophysical Plasma Emission Database, and outputs plasma spectral models. APEC has its origins in the Raymond-Smith code, but is totally revamped to exploit modern computing capabilities and the wealth of accurate atomic data.

APEC itself contains no atomic data (with the sole exception of photoionization cross sections of hydrogenic ions, which improves speed and accuracy). Many atomic processes can be calculated to determine level populations for ions, including dielectronic and radiative recombination followed by cascades, as well as collisional excitation and de-excitation. Continuum processes include two-photon emission, radiative recombination, and relativistic bremsstrahlung.

The APEC collaboration consists of:

  • Nancy Brickhouse
  • Priya Desai
  • Ronnie Hoogerwerf
  • Duane Liedahl
  • John Raymond
  • Randall Smith
