Results of the Student Surveys
The data reported on this page are the result of surveys that are sent annually to the
Prinicpal Investigators (PIs) of approved Chandra programs. The surveys aim to discover
how many students (undergraduates, graduate and post-doctoral) are working with these PIs on
Chandra data. The results are tallied every year and in total for all years, giving
us a clear picture of student involvement with the Chandra mission. More information
may be found here.
In the following tables, the column headers UG, GR, and PD indicate the number of
unique undergraduate, graduate, and post-doc students reported by respondents for the year
listed. The totals are then tallied over all years, with some caveats (see below).

Notes on Student Numbers
These numbers represent the number of unique undergraduates, graduates, and post-docs reported as working with Chandra PIs in the years listed.
A single student will count toward the totals of each year he or she is listed,
but will only count once toward the grand total. However, a student that works
one year as an undergraduate and one year as a graduate student will count once toward the grand totals
of undergraduates and graduates each, as well as toward the totals of each year he or she worked.
PhD Theses Making Use of Chandra Data
Every year, a certain number of PhD candidates write their dissertations using data from
Chandra observations. We have attempted to quantify the number of theses per
year, using data compiled from several sources, including the student surveys and the
SAO/NASA Astrophysics Data System, among others.
A more comprehensive list may be found here.
