Sherpa error message

I am trying to read my HETG data into Sherpa to do some basic analysis.
Everything goes fine (basically following Example 2 of sect. 6.3 in the
Sherpa manual) until I issue the fit command, when I always get the
following error:

sherpa> fit
Error: Instrument Evaluation Stack Error .
  -- instrument folding not supported for this data type.

I have tried reading the data and background in in a number of formats
(ascii,.pha, etc), and have tried a couple of .arf/.rmf pairs, but I
persist in getting this error. I was wondering if anyone has run into a
similar error and what they did to correct it. I only get the error after
applying the instrument model.
