FYI,
Here at Penn State (Solaris machines, openwindows, tcsh) we've found that the
CIAO 2.1 setup script cannot be "sourced" from a user's .cshrc. The message
ERROR: The current environment is already configured for:
version : CIAO 2.1 Wednesday, February 28, 2001
bin dir : /bulk/pkg/cxc/ciao_versions/ciao_2.1/bin
Please use the '-o' option to override the previous setup.
is produced. I surmise that some shell that's parent to the user's xterm
shell is sourcing the setup script which defines $ASCDS_INSTALL,
$ASCDS_INSTALL is inherited by the xterm's shell, and when the CIAO startup
script is run the second time it fails.
As a workaround we've added this statement to the CIAO 2.1 setup script
unsetenv ASCDS_INSTALL
This of course defeats some of the functionality the authors intended, but I
don't know what else to do. Our users do not wish to manually configure CIAO
in each of their shells. If anyone has any suggestions, please email
chandra-users.
On a related matter, we find that if FTOOLS and CIAO 2.1 are configured in the
same shell, the par files for both packages are mingled in ~/cxcds_param/. I
actually prefered the CIAO 2.0 design where CIAO nicely used ~/cxcds_param/
and FTOOLS used ~/PFILES/. Oh well, I know that inter-package conflicts are a
very difficult problem to manage.
