For better or for worse, calcrmf does not attempt to guess the correct
calibration files for your data. Also, calcrmf does not know anything about
the calibration file settings in CIAO. You have to set explicitly the fef
file you would like to use.

Right, if you would like to use the new fefs, it is absolutely necessary to
reprocess the events files with the matching new gain maps.

As I said, calcrmf does not know anything about this. It reads whatever is
specified by the fef= parameter in its parameter file.

PS. new calcrmf/calcarf are available from the CXC software swap page
(links from calcrmf.1.07 and 1.00 actually point to the version 1.08 which
can read the new FEF files).

Note also that I have modified the FEF reading block and now calcrmf can
load the unsorted FEFs from CALDB.
