Dear Colleagues,

Version 0.5.16 of SLgtk is now available at

        http://space.mit.edu/CXC/software/slang/modules/slgtk

SLgtk is a software package which wraps the GIMP toolkit (Gtk) for
use in S-Lang, the scripting language of CIAO (the Chandra Data
Analysis System). S-Lang provides a powerful platform for scientific
analysis and rapid development, and may be used in CIAO from ISIS,
Sherpa, Chips, and slsh. By virtue of the PySL module S-Lang and
SLgtk may also be used within Python-based interactive analysis
systems offered by other missions.

SLgtk augments the core strengths of S-Lang (e.g. very fast array-
based numerics) with an importable module that makes it possible to
quickly construct sophisticated graphical interfaces from relatively
simple, and highly portable, scripts. One example of such is the
"VWhere" visualization and filtering tool described in

                http://arxiv.org/pdf/astro-ph/0412003

SLgtk also bundles scores of other guilets, ranging from simple button
and screen drawing examples to plotting and imaging of numerous file
formats, including FITS.

The release establishes compatibility with Gtk 2.8.6, bundles a Cairo
rendering example, adds overplotting capability to VWhere, and includes
several simplifications for external building and Debian packaging.

Regards,
Michael S. Noble
