The Chandra X-ray Center has a job opening for an IT specialist
Grades 7, 9; $43,801 to $67,125/yr) in the Science Data System group.
The employee in this position will provide support to the group by:
-Supporting the Chandra data analysis system (CIAO) and the Chandra Catalogs
-Using components of CIAO (e.g., CIAO tools, ChIPS, Sherpa) and helping
users
-Answering user questions
-Working as part of a team to design, test, maintain and support
software to extend the data analysis software capabilities
-Supporting software for data reduction and analysis
-Developing, updating and maintaining web-based and command line-based
material concerning the Chandra data analysis systems, the Chandra
Catalogs, and other data analysis related projects
-Contributing to the overall Chandra outreach program by supporting the
team with computer demonstrations at conferences and meetings and
hands-on sessions at workshops or schools
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
-(i) One year’s experience performing the above duties or (ii) superior
academic achievement as an undergrad in a Computer Science, Mathematics,
Astronomy, Physics or related field or (iii) one year of graduate level
education in one of the aforementioned fields
-Knowledge of Unix
-Good communication and interpersonal skills; self-motivated
HIGHLY DESIRED:
-Knowledge of programming techniques, computer equipment, and systems
software
-Knowledge of basic computer scripting (e.g., Python, Perl, S-Lang);
ability to write shell scripts
-Knowledge of data processing methods and techniques
-Knowledge of astronomical data analysis packages, such as but not
limited to CIAO, IDL, SAS, FTOOLS, XSPEC
-Knowledge of web development and maintenance software (e.g., HTML, XML,
CSS)
