The first public release of the SAOTrace ray-tracing software is now
available at the CXC Optics web site:

        http://cxcoptics.cfa.harvard.edu/

The SAOTrace software suite simulates the as-built performance of
grazing-angle X-ray optics, and provides the official model of Chandra's
mirrors. It is the back-end to the ChaRT Web interface.

SAOTrace was designed primarily as an engineering tool for the Chandra
(formerly AXAF) X-ray telescope, and in its current state is of use
only to the intrepid user. Documentation is uneven, and there is no
system level documentation which provides an overview of the package and
its capabilities. It is released AS-IS, with no guaranteed support.

Please note that this software is a product of the CXC Optics group, not
the CXC Data Systems group (which brings you CIAO) and is not supported
by them (it's just barely supported by CXC Optics). Please DO NOT
contact the CXC Help Desk with questions about SAOTrace.
