CIAO 4.2 Sherpa version 2 released 19 July 2010

The Chandra X-ray Center (CXC) is pleased to announce that a new
version of Sherpa for the current CIAO 4.2 ("Chandra Interactive
Analysis of Observations") is available for download from:
http://cxc.harvard.edu/ciao/download/.
CIAO upgrades are now greatly simplified and automated by the
ciao-install script generated based on selections from the download
page. The script can be used to upgrade the version of Sherpa if the
CIAO 4.2 has been already installed or install the full CIAO 4.2 with
the Sherpa version 2 upgrade.
Sherpa v2 is available for all the platforms supported by CIAO 4.2
except Mac OS X 10.4 PPC.
This version of Sherpa contains only the Python user interface and
support for the S-Lang scripting language has been removed. S-Lang is
still included for the CIAO tools and modules and for the ChIPS
plotting application. Users who need help changing their S-Lang
scripts and code to Python are encouraged to contact the Helpdesk for
help and advice.
The main Sherpa enhancements are related to working with models. There
are several new functions that allow users to combine convolved and
unconvolved model components into one model expression. Many
improvements to user model interface give needed flexibility for
incorporating user models, including XSPEC-style table models. Working
with PSF has also been significantly improved. This version also
incorporates many bug fixes.
