Hello, Chandra Users,

See the CIAO "What's New" web page
http://cxc.cfa.harvard.edu/ciao/news.html
for the following announcements:

I. CIAO Scripts Package updates:

The CIAO team has released an update to the CIAO science scripts
tarfile. This new file may be downloaded via ciao-install
(http://cxc.harvard.edu/ciao/download/) - which will also install the
new CALDB changes - or from the CIAO Scripts Page
(http://cxc.harvard.edu/ciao/download/scripts/).

The changes in this release are:

o) The merge_all script is now deprecated (although still available);
please use one or more of the merge_obs, reproject_obs, or
flux_obs scripts which are new in this release.

o) fluximage
    http://cxc.harvard.edu/ciao/ahelp/fluximage.html

The fluximage script has seen a large number of improvements,
including a change to the parameter interface, support
for using spectral weight files, and changes to the file
    naming scheme to match merge_obs.

o) chandra_repro
    http://cxc.harvard.edu/ciao/ahelp/chandra_repro.html

    * the script can now process multiple observations in one go

    * files are now copied, rather than linked (this reverses a
change made in the April 2012 release)

o) a large number of color look-up tables has been added for
    use in ChIPS and ds9.

II. CalDB 4.5.3 released:

As promised in my email of 04 October 2012, CalDB 4.5.3, with the
*re-correctons* of the ACIS Group E blank-sky background data datasets,
is now ready for download and installation. CalDB 4.5.3 corrects a
secondary file block structure error that appeared in the CalDB 4.5.2
release of 27 Sep 2012. That error caused a failure in
acis_bkgnrd_lookup, and has now been corrected.

The upgrade may be installed automatically using the "ciao-install"
script, newly updated for the CalDB 4.5.3 tar files, which is available at:

http://cxc.cfa.harvard.edu/ciao/download/

The release notes for CalDB 4.5.3 are included here:

and user information on "How CalDB 4.5.3 Affects Your Analysis" is at:

If you would prefer to download and install CalDB 4.5.3 manually, you
may access the CalDB Download Web page at:

for explicit instructions.

As always please send questions and requests for enhancements to the CXC
HELPDESK (http://cxc.harvard.edu/helpdesk/).

CIAO/CALDB is a collaborative effort between the SAO/CXC Science Data
Systems, the SAO/CXC Data Systems, and MIT/CXC personnel.
