What's New for CIAO 4.1

Date

Item

03 Nov 2009

A new version of the Contributed Scripts and Modules tarfile has been released; download the updated package from the Scripts page.

  • SherpaCL

Initial release of the experimental sherpacl application that allows users to use CIAO 3.4 syntax for Sherpa and ChIPS commands in CIAO 4. The language that can be used is currently limited. Refer to "ahelp sherpacl" and the the SherpaCL page on the Sherpa website for more information and usage examples.

We welcome user feedback on this project via the Helpdesk.

  • New deflare script

The deflare script allows users to create a GTI filter from a background lightcurve using either the lc_clean or lc_sigma_clip methods directly from the UNIX prompt, without having to start up ChIPS or Sherpa.

  • Improvements to lc_clean and lc_sigma_clip

Both routines have been updated to better handle data with "extreme" lightcurves: either by erroring out or being able to create GTI files which contain a large number of time intervals.

The screen output (when verbose is set) has been modified to provide more information on the length of each interval.

CIAO 4.1.2 is not officially supported on the Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) platform, but there is a workaround for installing the software in the Unsupported Platforms section of the Platforms page.

CALDB has been updated to v4.1.4.

Information on the release is available from the CALDB 4.1.4 Release Notes and How CALDB 4.1.4 Affects Your Analysis.

A new version of the Contributed Scripts and Modules tarfile has been released; download the updated package from the Scripts page.

  • The sherpa_utils (S-Lang or Python help) module has been updated to include save_instmap_weights (S-Lang or Python help); its use is described in the Calculating Spectral Weights for mkinstmap (S-Lang or Python) thread.
  • A new module - ciao_utils (S-Lang or Python help) - has been added; it contains two routines for data analysis: simple_stats (S-Lang or Python help) and simple_hist (S-Lang or Python help).
  • The check_ciao_caldb script has been updated to check the existence of the CALDB in a more intelligent way. Functionality is unchanged.

The merge_all script will produce incorrect results if one (or more) of the observations was done with an offset. For details and a workaround, refer to the merge_all bugs page.

Download issue on Mac OS X 10.5.7 Intel

Multiple users have reported that they are unable to download the CIAO tarfiles on Mac OS X Intel 10.5.7 from the Safari browser (v3.2.3 and v4). Please try an alternate browser, e.g. Mozilla Firefox, and contact Helpdesk if you continue to have a problem.

01 Jun 2009

Small updates were made to the fullgarf and merge_all scripts in the 01 Jun 2009 script tarfile. Read about the changes and download the updated package from the Scripts page.

After acis_process_events is run with apply_cti=no, the CTI_APP keyword is correctly set to NNNNNNNNNN. Due to a problem in how the CALDB files are looked up, running acis_process_events on this file again with apply_cti=yes does not apply the CTI correction. The CTI_APP keyword will still be set to NNNNNNNNNN.

Read the bug page for workarounds to this problem.

Download the CIAO 4.1.2 patch. CIAO 4.1.2 includes several new CIAO tools and many enhancements to Sherpa, the modeling and fitting package. This patch includes a full installation of the CIAO software for Solaris 10 (SunOS 5.10, SPARC). Read the release notes for detailed information.

CALDB has been updated to v4.1.2.

Information on the release is available from the CALDB 4.1.2 Release Notes and How CALDB 4.1.2 Affects Your Analysis.

13 Feb 2009

All of the CIAO Science Threads have been reviewed and updated for CIAO 4.1.

The "S-Lang" section of the thread index was removed. Threads which use Python and S-Lang are located in the appropriate science categories of the index.

New caveat: ACIS Event Thresholds.

A number of ACIS observations have a non-standard event threshold, which limits the useable energy range in the analysis.

21 Jan 2009

CALDB 4.1.0 has been updated to CALDB 4.1.1.

Information on the release is available from the CALDB 4.1.1 Release Notes and How CALDB 4.1.1 Affects Your Analysis.

Download CALDB 4.1.1

15 Jan 2009

Download the CIAO 4.1.1 patch. The patch contains PIMMS data files for Cycle 11 proposal planning.

30 Dec 2008

If you downloaded CALDB 4.1.0 before 2:00PM EST on 30 December 2008, the permissions are set incorrectly on the acis/bkgrnd directory.

The owner of the installation must fix this in order for the files to be accessible:

chmod 755 $CALDB/data/chandra/acis/bkgrnd

This has been corrected in the tarfiles, so downloads after that date and time have the correct permissions.

15 Dec 2008

Download CIAO 4.1, the newest version of the Chandra Interactive Analysis of Observations software, released on 15 December 2008.

CIAO 4.1 features a complete, non-beta version of Sherpa, the modeling and fitting package. Read the release notes for detailed information.

15 Dec 2008

Download CALDB 4.1, which has been released for use with CIAO 4.1. It is required for the software to run correctly.

Information on the release is available from the CALDB Release Notes and How CIAO 4.1 and CALDB 4.1 Affect Your Analysis.
