SOT shift report 2011-08-10 L4402 File created at 2011:222:12:39 UTC = 08:39AM Aug-10-2011 EDT End 11:00:00AM EDT; SOT Lead: Ed Kellogg PLAN: OBSID 13394, CHECCS000105-2503 2011:223:01:37, ACIS-I NONE - extended cluster cosmology sample MP: the AUG15 products are to be released for review this morning. SIGNIFICANT SOLAR ACTIVITY: Yesterday at 0805 UT, region 11263 produced an X7-class solar flare while at or near the northwest limb -- only the third X-flare of new Solar Cycle 24 and the most powerful so far. The brunt of the explosion was not Earth directed. The blast accelerated a mild torrent of protons toward Earth. The CME will probably miss Earth. At this time, however, we cannot rule out a glancing blow from the flank of the cloud on August 11th or 12th. GOES X-ray flux: multiple short duraction C class events in the last 24 hours. CMEs: August 8: The M3.5 flare in region 11263 produced a fast partial halo CME. August 9: The X6.9 event in region 11263 was associated with a fast full halo CME.
