SOT shift report 2009-07-08 L3639 File created at 2009:189:12:41 UTC = 08:41AM Jul-08-2009 EDT End 11:00:00AM EDT SOT Lead: Ed Kellogg PLAN ---- OBSID 10544, M82-SW 2009:188:21:06, ACIS-S NONE - Wide, deep and sharp: A comprehensive observation of M82, the exemplar of starburst activity. CURRENT STA. PASS Support-UTC BOT EOT ---Station------ Local Time ----------------- ------------ --- --- ---------------- ---------- 189/0945-1200 1045 1145 DSS-27 GOLDSTONE 0645-0745 EDT MP: In a very quick turnaround we released and approved the 07Jul09A replan load with no grating observations. It is good 'til 10 July. Today, we will work on the next load, also with no grating observations, and will include the newly approved TOO in either the rest of this week or next week. S/C: No new issues overnight. We examined the TLM and code. It appears that the HETG retract switch may have come back to life. Since it was not expected, it generated the OBC error during yesterday's grating retraction at the end of ObsID 10222 (just after 06:37 UTC). Perhaps by coincidence, Chandra was in an attitude that had EPHIN hot. We will be working on a flight software K constant patch to ignore whatever state the HETG retract switch is in, needed before we can resume any grating moves. We also must clear the OBC error. Significant solar activity: Region 11024 decayed early yesterday, then new flux emerged in the trailing and intermediate spot sections. There is an increasing chance of C flares. This is the first big sunspot of new Solar Cycle 24, and it is crackling with minor but photogenic B-class flares. By itself, this one active region won't bring an end to the deepest solar minimum in a century, but it does show that the sun's magnetic dynamo is still working--a fact some had begun to doubt. GOES X-ray flux: three B class outbursts since 0000 UTC. None are of concern. CMEs: none.
