SOT shift report 2009-09-30 L3723 File created at 2009:273:12:48 UTC = 08:48AM Sep-30-2009 EDT End 11:00:00AM EDT SOT Lead: Ed Kellogg PLAN ---- OBSID 09929, GM Aur 2009:273:10:59, ACIS-S NONE - Constraining the Effects of High Energy Photons on Proto-Planetary Disk Chemistry and Evolution. GM Aurigae is a newly formed star quite close to us (~650 LY) with a disk of material extending out 300 AU (earth orbit radius). The disk is cleared at < 4 AU, indicating the presence of a Jupiter-size planet. The central star emits lots more X-rays than our Sun, typical for a newly formed star. These X-rays irradiate the dust disk, causing a variety of chemical reactions that likely influence the formation of chemical compounds. Uultimately, these may be involved in the creation of life. MP: The OCT05 load will be reviewed today at 2:00. S/C: All quiet. The MUPS CAP review will be held today at 11:00. SIGNIFICANT SOLAR ACTIVITY: At midnight there was 1 spotted region on the visible solar disk. Region 11027 decayed and could soon become spotless. GOES X-ray flux: very quiet. CMEs: none. There are aspect issues in the processing. SOT --- Cosmic rays originating outside the solar system are ~4x higher than at solar max. This means that the extrasolar component of the quiescent ACE proton flux, currently ~20 particles/cm2-s-ster-MeV, is that much higher than it would be during solar maximum. Of course at solar max the Sun can increase the total flux by factors of order 1000 during an outburst.
