Load segments were uplinked - we are good 'till day 086:0830. No CAPs. Talk box problem still with us. Bell Atlantic will come today to investigate. Mission planning: Ken is waiting for two star fields from RAC. First review of load went OK yesterday. Next review this pm/tom'w am. Spacecraft eng'ng: Paul is testing OFLS 8.1a. He has verified that the roll contraint/target offset problem is fixed. The ACIS bias is not working satisfactorily and will require another patch. He hopes to complete testing this week. We will go ahead with incorporating this version. The work on safe mode recovery procedures is now at the CCDM and fine attitude recovery SOP stage. Flt software: CPE count was dumped, is still 1. The short eclipse patch is tested on ASVT and will be uplinked shortly. The technique is to not read out a few rows. These rows will accumulate charge. They are then swept over the chip to fill up traps. Recent ground tests, using 10-100 rows and a Co60 source to simulate cosmic rays have shown a very significant improvement in CTI & FWHM energy resolution. At -120 C, in the last row, the FWHM improves from 400 to 235 eV, and the CTI from 1.5e-4 to 1.2 e-4. The device tested was irradiated to about the same level as S2. Other FI chips might even achieve 200 eV, much closer to the prelaunch performance. It looks like the optimum number of rows is ~20; more rows do not help. A side effect of the squeegee mode is a larger gap between chips; it also adds 40 ms to the readout time. These tests were run with an integration time of 3.3 s. We plan to run a flight test on the S0 chip ~first week in April, after some preparations. First test, will do only one row.
