Observing 'LAMBDA AND' (obsid 2558) with HRC-S/LETG. Radiation levels are high. Soft protons running at 7,000 to 8,000 and are flat. X4 flare earlier today will affect us somewhat later on in week Hard proton rates from GOES are elevated but still below trip levels. Levels are flat. EPHIN trips are well below thresholds. SpaceWeather.com: ACTIVE SUN: Solar activity remains high. The source is sunspot 39, emerging near the Sun's southeastern limb (pictured right). Twisted magnetic fields above the active region erupted this morning, July 23rd at 0035 UT. The explosion sparked a powerful X4-class solar flare and hurled a coronal mass ejection (CME) into space. Although the CME was not squarely Earth-directed, some of the expanding cloud is heading our way. Sky watchers should be alert for auroras when the CME arrives--possibly late Wednesday, July 24rd.
