Soft proton levels are low, currently flux is under 50. Information from ACE Team regarding switch of EPAM Channel: February 4, 2004: At approximately 1600 UTC today (2/4/2004) real-time proton data from the EPAM LEMS30 instrument were replaced with similar proton data from the LEMS120 sensor. The new proton channels cover the following energy ranges: 47-68 keV, 115-195 keV, 310-580 keV, and 1.06-1.9 MeV. Previous real-time electron (38-53, 175-315 keV) and proton (0.761-1.22 MeV) data from the EPAM CA60 telescope remain unchanged. Lists of 5-minute and 1-hour averaged data were backfilled to January 29, 2004. Additional information concerning these new data can be found in the ACE Lists The LEMS120 sensor is 120 deg off the sun, vs. 30 degrees for the LEMS30. This is OK since radiation flux is isotropic. However, the LEMS120 channels seem to be noisier due to influencd of trapped radiation from the earth. P3 rates scaled from P5 and P6 are still calculated, and are consistent with P3 rates from the LEMS120 sensor. SOT Alert trigger have been modified as follows: Sot_red_alert is notified when P3 (115-195 keV) 2-hr fluence exceeds 3.6e8 particles/cm2-s-ster-MeV. Until we are sure of the reliability and scaling of the data, the sot_red_alert when P3_scaled (FP6p*36) exceeds 1.2e8 particles/cm2-s-ster-MeV is also still armed. (The FP6p channel has not changed). SOT will continue analysis to verify performance of new sensor. 3-day Solar-Geophysical Forecast issued Feb 4 at 22:00 UTC Solar Activity Forecast: Solar activity is expected to be low. There is a chance for an isolated M-class event. Geophysical Activity Forecast: The geomagnetic field is expected to be generally quiet to unsettled with occasional active periods for 05-06 February. Quiet to unsettled conditions are expected for 07 February as the affects of the high speed solar wind stream subside.
