X-RAY ASTRONOMY 2009: Present Status, multiwavelength approach and future perspectives ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Item 1. Chandra's First Decade of Discovery ============================================ Registration is now open for Chandra's First Decade of Discovery at http://cxc.harvard.edu/symposium_2009/index.html. 22-25 September, 2009 Seaport Hotel Boston Massachusetts This will be the fifth symposium in a series highlighting unique imaging and spectroscopic results from NASA's Chandra X-Ray Observatory. This event will celebrate key science results from the first ten years of operation of the Chandra X-ray Observatory. The focus will be on results which have had the largest impact on Astrophysics, including: The Cosmic Evolution of AGN, AGN outflows, evolutionary processes in clusters of galaxies, source populations and diffuse emission from normal galaxies, physical processes at the Galactic center, high spatial and spectral studies of neutron star physics, supernova remnants and star forming regions. We will also cover recent results from the XMM-Newton, Suzaku, Swift, INTEGRAL, RXTE and AGILE missions, as well as related theoretical results. ** INVITED AND CONTRIBUTED TALKS AND POSTERS The Symposium will include invited talks plus oral and poster contributions. The number of slots for oral presentations is limited. However, we will highlight the Posters via long breaks, with coffee and refreshments in the Poster rooms. Also, there will be an opening reception Monday evening, and a Poster viewing session Tuesday evening, both with food and drinks. The (confirmed) invited speakers are as follows: Keynote speaker: Riccardo Giacconi (Johns Hopkins University) Carles Badenes - (Tel-Aviv University) Elizabeth Blanton (Boston University) Niel Brandt (Pennsylvania State University) Eric Feigelson (Pennsylvania State University) Victoria Kaspi (McGill University) Julia C. Lee (Harvard University) Sera Markoff (API, University of Amsterdam) Dave Pooley - (University of Wisconsin) Dan Schwartz - (Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory) Paola Testa - (Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory) Alexey Vikhlinin (Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory) Q. Daniel Wang - (University of Massachusetts) Martin C. Weisskopf (NASA/Marshall Space Flight Center) The DEADLINE for submitting abstracts to be considered for an oral presentation is 10-July. Please submit your abstract on-line at http://cxc.harvard.edu/symposium_2009/abstracts.html (the deadline for abstracts for poster presentations is 21 August 2009). Registration is open at http://cxc.harvard.edu/symposium_2009/registration.html. Registration fees are $475 ($300 for students, $225 for guests) on or before 4-September and $600 thereafter. There will be a $100 processing fee for all cancellations on or before 21-August, with no refunds thereafter. General and student registration includes two receptions, four breakfasts, three lunches, and two breaks per day, plus a lunchtime cruise aboard the Spirit of Boston. A guest registration fee includes both receptions, all breakfasts and lunches, and one cruise ticket; attendance at the talks and the breaks is not included. The Chandra Calibration Review will occur 21-September, the day before Chandra's First Decade of Discovery, also at the Seaport Boston. The purpose of the Calibration Review is to share the Chandra calibration teams' knowledge of the detectors and mirrors with the community, while encouraging participation and feedback in the process of calibrating the Observatory. While there is no registration fee for this review, attendees must register. Visit the CCR web site at http://cxc.harvard.edu/ccr/ for more information and to register. Abstracts for the CCR may be submitted at http://cxc.harvard.edu/ccr/present/abstract.html ** TRAVEL AND LODGING http://cxc.harvard.edu/symposium_2009/travel.html A block of rooms has been reserved for attendees of Chandra's First Decade of Discovery and the Chandra Calibration Review at the Seaport Hotel, which is adjacent to the World Trade Center. The room rate is $249/night for a standard room (single or double occupancy) plus 12.45% hotel taxes and a Hotel Inclusive Charge of $3 per room per night. For more than two guests in a room, there will be a $25 charge per person per night. This rate is available for the dates September 20 through September 26, 2009. In order to take advantage of the rate, reservations must be made by 5:00 p.m. EDT on August 21, 2009. Requests for accommodations received after the cut-off date will be accepted on a space available basis at the hotel's prevailing rate, including the federal government rate for government employees. ** SYMPOSIUM WEB SITE The most current information on the Symposium can be found on the web site http://cxc.harvard.edu/symposium_2009/index.html. In particular, news and announcements will be posted at http://cxc.harvard.edu/symposium_2009/announce.html. Scott Wolk, Doug Swartz and Antonella Fruscione ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Item 2. Chandra Calibration Review =================================== We will be holding the Calibration Review in conjunction with Chandra's First Decade of Discovery symposium at the Seaport Hotel in Boston, Massachusetts. Calibration talks will be presented on Monday September 21, and calibration-related posters will be displayed throughout the symposium. http://cxc.harvard.edu/ccr/ Vinay Kashyap ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Item 3. X-RAY ASTRONOMY 2009: Present Status, multiwavelength approach and future perspectives ========================================================================= SECOND CIRCULAR =============== +-----------------------------------------------------+ | X-RAY ASTRONOMY 2009 | | Present Status, multiwavelength approach | | and future perspectives | | September 7 - 11, 2009 | | Aula Absidale di Santa Lucia | | Bologna (Italy) | | http://www.iasfbo.inaf.it/events/xray2009/index.php | +-----------------------------------------------------+ Dear Colleague, This is the second announcement for the Bologna X-ray Astronomy 2009 conference. The meeting will highlight the contributions of XMM-Newton, Chandra and Suzaku observatories over the last ten years and celebrate the International Year of Astronomy (IYA2009). We plan to address major observational and theoretical aspects of X-ray emission from a wide range of cosmic sources. Emphasis will be given to multiwavelength studies of cosmic sources and associated synergies with major facilities at all wavelengths, and on the perspectives for future high-energy astrophysics missions. We would like to notify you that, due to technical problems with payments by credit card, the DEADLINES for abstract submission and early registration have been postponed to: ----> MAY 15 <----- A preliminary program, along with a list of invited speakers is available at http://www.iasfbo.inaf.it/events/xray2009/programme.php and is also appended below.
